The Harbor Gateway is a neighborhood in southern part of the city of Los Angeles, California. As of the 2000 census, the neighborhood had a population of 39,860 [1].

Description

The Harbor Gateway is a two-mile wide north-south corridor between Western and Normandie Avenues. The territory was acquired by the city of Los Angeles in a shoestring annexation, to specifically connect San Pedro, Wilmington and the Port of Los Angeles with the rest of the city (note the vertical red line on the map to the right.)

Despite being part of the city of Los Angeles, some parts of Harbor Gateway have a "Torrance, CA", "Gardena, CA" or "Carson, CA" address because they are serviced by those cities' post offices.

The Harbor Gateway is often referred to by locals as "The Strip". Most residents who live in this peculiar arrangement are not even aware of it^{citation needed}, which has led to problems with city services, such as police, fire, and trash. The Los Angeles Police Department has had difficulties patrolling the area as it is served by the Harbor Division (headquartered in San Pedro), and Southeast (headquartered on Broadway and 108th), respectively.^{citation needed}

Demographics

As of the census¹ of 2000, there were 39,860 people and 11,994 housing units in the neighborhood. The population density was 7,988.8/mi². The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 31.99% White, 16.33% African American, 0.82% Native American, 15.25% Asian, 0.71% Pacific Islander, 29.36% from other races, and 5.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 54.17% of the population.

In 2009, the Los Angeles Times's "Mapping L.A." project supplied these Harbor Gateway neighborhood statistics: population: 39,684; median household income: $47,849.^{citation needed}

Furthermore, the ethnic compision is White (11.8%), Asian (15.7%), African American (16.3%), Latino (53.4%) and Other (2.8%).^{citation needed}

Government and infrastructure

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services operates the Torrance Health Center in Harbor Gateway, near Torrance.²

The National Transportation Safety Board operates the Gardena Aviation Field Office in Harbor Gateway; it is the regional headquarters of the NTSB Aviation Western Region.³

Economy

The headquarters of National Stores (Fallas Paredes) is in Harbor Gateway, near Gardena.⁴ Yoshinoya America's headquarters are in Harbor Gateway, near Torrance.⁵
