Edge Hill University is situated in Ormskirk in Lancashire, England. It has three faculties, Education, Health, and Arts and Sciences.
In November 2006, Edge Hill University won the Times Higher Award for 'Outstanding Student Financial Support Package'citation needed. In late 2007 it was confirmed that Edge Hill University had made the shortlist for 'University of the Year' in the Times Higher Education Awards 2007citation needed

History
Edge Hill College was opened on 24 January 1885 on Durning Road, Edge Hill, Liverpool, named after the district in which it was sited. It was the first non-denominational teacher training college for women in England. By 1892, Edge Hill was one of only two colleges in England combining teacher training and degree course study.
As student numbers increased, Edge Hill quickly outgrew its surroundings. The institution was handed over to the Lancashire Education Committee, with the foundation stone for the present Ormskirk campus laid on 26 October 1931. Between 1939 and 1946, the college was evacuated to Bingley, in Yorkshire, and the Ormskirk site was requisitioned for use as a military hospital.
Edge Hill became a mixed college, admitting its first male students in October 1959, when it had about 500 students in total. The institution has since expanded rapidly; with further developments at Ormskirk and the absorption of the former Sefton School of Health Studies, it has over 14,000 students in 2006.
In 2005, Edge Hill was granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers by the Privy Council. On 18 May 2006 the institution became Edge Hill University.
Courses
Almost 23,000 students are currently studying at Edge Hill University and applications have increased three-fold since 2000. Edge Hill scored strongly in the latest National Student Survey with an overall satisfaction rating from students of 83%, placing Edge Hill second in the North West.3
Edge Hill University's undergraduate courses include foundation degrees, BA/BSc degrees, health preregistration qualifications and teacher training degrees.
Postgraduate provision includes PGCEs, Masters programmes, an MBA and MPhil and PhD research degrees.
There are also extensive opportunities for professional development at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Campus
Ormskirk Campus
Edge Hill has its main 160-acre (650,000 m2) campus in Ormskirk on the outskirts of Liverpool. An investment of almost £60m to date has seen the campus develop extensively in recent years, including a new £5m Centre for Performing Arts , £9m Faculty of Education building, a £14m eco-friendly Faculty of Health building and the latest £8m Business School, which opened in January 2009. The acquisition of 80 acres of surrounding land will allow the University to significantly increase its footprint by 2020.
On-campus amenities include restaurants and cafes, a bar and nightclub, two theatres, a general shop, a large library and IT suites with 24hr Internet access. The award-winning campus sports complex was recently included in the Pre-Olympic Games Training Guide for London 2012.
As well as the existing halls of residence, work has started to build new student accommodation on campus that will provide an extra 154 bedspaces.
Other Sites
The Woodlands campus is based in Chorley, Lancashire and offers continuing professional development programmes and part-time study.
Wirral Education Centre offers HLTA training and foundation degrees in Supporting Teaching and Learning. Woodford Lodge in Cheshire is the base for education-related foundation degrees and HLTA training in Cheshire. Part-time Primary QTS programmes, HLTA training and education-related foundation degrees can also be studied at the Training and Development Centre in Shrewsbury.
Edge Hill University also has a network of partner colleges teaching and delivering some of its Foundation degrees. Partners include: Blackburne House, Hugh Baird College, Knowsley Community College, Liverpool Community College, Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute, Respiratory Education UK, Riverside College, Southport College, Trafford College and Wirral Metropolitan College.
Sport
Edge Hill have many different sports teams which represent them in the BUCS leagues. Teams include: Netball, Football, Futsal, Hockey, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Badminton and Pool. All teams play their home games on Wednesdays afternoons at the University's sport venues and other private venues in the local area such as Ormskirk R.U.F.C. Daniel Little is the Sports Co-ordinator for the University. Neil Unsworth is the Player-Union liaison of the university.
The season 2009-2010 saw the Edge Hill Mens Rugby Union 1st team get promoted after winning the league and playoff finals, as well as winning team of the year after some lucky results in the league.
As of 21st March 2010 it is rumored that Edge Hill Rugby Union 1st Team Prop Paul Preston is in negotiations with England Students & Harlequins. Although nothing has been confirmed at this time. 4
Widening participation
2005 HEFCE performance indicators placed Edge Hill as first among all English higher education institutions for attracting mature and part time undergraduates from under-represented groups and in the top four nationally for attracting young students from working class families. Action on Access, the national coordination team which supports institutions and partnerships to promote widening participation in higher education is based at the University. Edge Hill leads the Greater Merseyside and West Lancashire Lifelong Learning Network – a partnership of higher education institutions and 14 further education colleges providing pathways to higher education for vocational learners.
SOLSTICE (eLearning)
SOLSTICE is one of the 74 national Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs), established in April 2005 for a five year period. SOLSTICE enhances student learning and the learning environment through:
Investment in technologies and facilities for learning. Research into the student experience to inform policy and practice. Promoting a student centred approach to support online and blended learning and the use of learning technologies. A permanent SOLSTICE Centre has been established. The SOLSTICE Centre provides a dedicated and flexible space to support creative thinking, teaching, learning and development.
